This extremely well made film is akin to the recent spate of non-traditional competition films (marching bands, cheerleading, paper-rock-scissors, etc), with a fun visual style, excellent use of archival footage and a fascinating history of the “sport.” Five teams are the focus and their goal is, of course, to win the world championship of jump-rope. The film creates an engaging narrative. Focusing first on the U.S. Nationals in Orlando, followed by the 800-plus competitors at the World Championships in Toronto, this documentary provides an engaging narrative arc.
By following the teams from around the U.S., Jump! provides an impressive glimpse of this extreme sport that is also part art form – wait until you see them break dance while jumping rope. Each of the jump-rope teams is motivated by different factors, but all want the same prize, to win the World Championship. The stories of the athletes are as impressive as the sport itself, and by moving chronologically from the regional to the national to the world competitions, we see a year in the life of these extremely talented young people who train relentlessly to win at any price. Jump! will dispel any notions of jump-rope as a novelty sport; rather, what emerges is a portrait of a sport as serious as any gymnastic pursuit seen in the Olympics.
