Tulipani: Love, Honour and a Bicycle
BEST OF THE FEST
COMING SEPTEMBER 7
Old fashioned and refreshing, van Diem’s latest is a wonderfully engaging tale that travels across three countries to reveal a bizarre family history.
Anna (Ksenia Solo) has arrived in Italy to return her guardian’s ashes to her hometown. What she didn’t count on was learning the story of her parents, which with years of retelling, has taken on, shall we say, a certain exaggerated flair. In this case the mix includes a touch of spaghetti Western, a dash of martial arts and a smidge of The Godfather. Learning about her father’s exploits biking from the Netherlands to Italy, building a successful business growing and selling tulips, and introducing Dutch irrigation techniques to Puglia will bring Anna closer to her parents than ever and drive her to settle some old scores on their behalf.
Van Diem’s flights of fancy and use of the surreal create a playful film full of whimsy that caused Tulipani to be one of the most popular films at the Victoria Film Festival.
