“It’s clever to the point of bloody brilliant”

– Roger Moore, Movie Nation

“a thoughtful commentary on disaffected youth that still delivers genuine thrills”

– J.R. Kinnard, The Seattle Times

In a true-crime story like no other, director Bart Layton dramatizes the “Transy Book Heist”, where four college students decide to shake up their mundane lives by robbing their school of rare books and manuscripts worth millions. Overconfident from watching too many films, they soon discover it may not be as easy as Steven Soderbergh or Stanley Kubrick make it seem. While American Animals takes on the appearance of the testosterone-filled heist movies that inspired the students, it brilliantly subverts those expectations as the film blends thriller and documentary, exploring youthful restlessness and the disillusionment of their young male privilege.

A favourite at Sundance 2018, and nominated for the Grand Jury Prize, American Animals feels like a landmark film in the making. It’s wildly entertaining, structurally groundbreaking, and supports an incredible young cast including Barry Keoghan, Evan Peters, and Blake Jenner; all of whom are just on the verge of stardom. Bringing it all together is Layton’s documentarian eye to create a truly special and of-the-moment film.
