COMING JUNE 22
After receiving rave reviews at Venice, Toronto, and New York, the latest film from the legendary screenwriter Paul Schrader (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull) makes its Victoria premiere at the Vic Theatre.
Writing and directing the film, Schrader creates unforgettable picture of a tortured man, struggling to reconcile with his faith. Ethan Hawke plays Reverend Ernst Toller, pastor of a small church in upstate New York. As his congregation slowly leaves him for a nearby megachurch, he finds his faith is now strained, if not hanging on by a thread. When a young pregnant woman, Mary (Amanda Seyfried), comes to him for help, he will find his spiritual ennui radically changed in a way he couldn’t have imagined.
Schrader’s incredible exploration into the soul is as grounded as it is poetic. It recalls the work of masters such as Robert Bresson and Ingmar Bergman, and is certainly deserving of a spot next to their masterpieces. As it investigates complex and emotionally rich ground, First Reformed does more than linger with you after the credits roll. It is a cinematic feat like few others, and will continue to reward you the longer you spend with it.
