Synopsis
No one ever had to tell Liza Minnelli, a performer of trembling vulnerability and commanding stage presence, to “go big” but many helped her along the way as we learn from Bruce David Klein’s eye-opening and affectionate biographical film. Launched as a teen star in the shadow of her legendary, tragic mother, Judy Garland, the now 77-year-old performer created her own persona, a living cartoon of pop-eyed, ball of energy in sequined gowns with the thrilling voice, mascara eyes and sky-punching dance moves. But how did she get to be Liza with a Z?
Bolstered by interviews with fellow performers Mia Farrow, Ben Vereen, Chita Rivera, and Joel Grey, the archival and contemporary interviews, explore the influence of her godmother, Kay Thompson, the actress, Minelli’s director father, Vincent Minnelli, the choreographer and director Bob Fosse, the French star, Charles Aznavour who showed her how to tell a story in a song, Cabaret lyricist Fred Ebb and designer Halston, each of whom was catalyzed by her presence and ambition. –LL
