Complex + Family + Quirky
Super 8, superheroes, a 2,000-mile road trip, and two brothers on a quest for answers. This is the journey that unfolds when filmmaker Reed Harkness asks his half-brother Sam to solve the mystery of Sam’s mother’s disappearance. Filmed over the expanse of 25 years, Sam and Reed delve unflinchingly into the trauma of Sam’s mother having left him in his most formative years of life. At the heart of their adventure are foundational questions of worth: what happened? What made her leave? Where is she now? Together Sam and Reed work through this family trauma of absence, silence, and mental health to rewrite their own stories and understandings. This loss from childhood turns into a creative reclaiming of Sam’s narrative in his teens, and then into a self-reflective exploration of the impacts to his self-concept and family overtime in his twenties. Sam Now is told through a series of home videos, Super 8 adventure films of Sam’s wetsuit and mask wearing alter ego, The Blue Panther, and modern HD, as Reed asks his family to face this traumatic hole in their collective experiences in order to heal.
