A triumph. It’s a funny, poignant and engrossing story set in New Zealand during the controversial South African rugby team’s tour. Josh Waaka finds himself at odds with the rugby-centric culture as he strives to embrace his Māori heritage. Soon enough he discovers a passion for acting with a drama teacher (played by Rhys Darby of Our Flag Means Death). Josh, played by Julian Dennison ((Hunt for the Wilder People), gives a deeply relatable performance for anyone who’s ever hidden in the library at lunchtime. Being both charismatic and likeable Dennison is an actor to watch and there is no better place to start than this thoroughly entertaining film about acceptance and rebellion.
