Film of the Month: Maker of Monsters: The Extraordinary Life of Beau Dick

Time: Saturday, March 17th at 7pm

Runtime: 91 minutes

Countries: Canada

Director: Natalie Boll, LaTiesha Ti’si’tla Fazakas

Beau Dick was many things: a Kwakwaka’wakw artist, enigmatic carver, environmentalist, former drug addict, political activist and an inspiration for positive change. Working within an ancient carving tradition he created remarkable masks which are vibrant expressions of West Coast Indigenous culture. His work broke barriers, finding a place among the white cube world of contemporary art and enabled him to rise to international success.

As one of Canada’s great artists Dick used his platform to embark on causes greater than himself. The Maker of Monsters manifested his political activism through a traditional ceremony that has not been performed in over 100 years. In 2013, Dick organized a 10-day, 500-kilometre journey across Vancouver Island to the Parliament buildings in Victoria. The following year he made a similar journey, this time to the steps of Parliament in Ottawa. In front of both Parliament buildings, he and others performed a copper-cutting ceremony, a century-old ceremony of public shaming that signified the cleaving of a relationship. Using the voice of his ancestors, Dick called for the need of a break between the First Nations and the Federal Government. In a way that could be described only as typical Beau Dick, he connected tradition with the modern world to bring a clear message from his people.

Maker of Monsters: The Extraordinary Life of Beau Dick strives to capture the enigmatic essence of Beau Dick and is a captivating tribute to this influential and recently deceased artist. So please, take your time to meet the mysterious Beau Dick and let him change you.
