The journey to becoming a VFF Volunteer

DO YOUR RESEARCH Below is a detailed description of the roles available to volunteers, and what each role entails. Please have a few choices ready of which roles you’d like to try out and indicate these choices on your application form.

FILL OUT AN AWESOME, TOTALLY NOT TEDIOUS APPLICATION Please fill out the form to the best of your ability, as this information is used to train, schedule, and organize our volunteer workforce.

THE WAITING GAME Once your application form is filled out, you will receive an automated message that it has been received. The Volunteer Coordinator will read through your application before any further steps are taken. Once the Volunteer Coordinator has evaluated your application, they may phone you or email you to clarify details or ask further questions. Please expect that you may not hear for a few days to a week after your application has been submitted.

TIME TO TRAIN Once your application has been approved by the Volunteer Coordinator, you will be invited to attend a New Volunteer Orientation followed by team-specific training sessions. These dates are typically scheduled for early-mid December and early January.

YOUR’RE SCHEDULED IN You’ve met the Volunteer Coordinator, attended a training meeting or two, and now you’re ready to be on the schedule! VFF uses Shiftboard to schedule our volunteer force, which is an awesome tool designed for volunteers! You can sign in at any time and check out your shifts, pick up or trade shifts, and see upcoming news and events. Volunteer shifts for the Victoria Film Festival begin the first week of January and end the last day of the Festival. *PLEASE NOTE: Volunteers are required to commit to a minimum of 15 hours of volunteer work during the lead up to and/or during the Festival.

THE FESTIVAL When you’re on your shifts, it’s important to maintain good customer service skills, be enthusiastic and positive, but most of all to have fun! The Festival is a unique event in Victoria that brings people from around the world and unites the community in a love of film and media arts. We want you to enjoy your experience so you want to come back year after year (we have some volunteers who have been with us for almost 20 years)!

REAP THE REWARDS We think you should get to enjoy the Festival too! Committing to 15 hours of volunteering earns you 5 free films at the Festival. These hours can be completed in January with office and box office work, or during the Festival. If your shifts are during the Festival, you may be eligible to receive your vouchers after completing one full shift as long as you are scheduled for 15 hours. Completing your hours also earns you an invite to our fabulous EndFest party, where volunteers and staff can eat, drink and celebrate all of our hard work and end-of-Festival exhaustion. It’s always a great party!
