We rely on volunteers to help during the Festival and with events and programs year-round. Volunteer positions include: distribution of promotional materials, set design, venue coordination, special events, hospitality, transportation, administrative, box office, photography, concession and more.

The journey to becoming a VFF Volunteer

DO YOUR RESEARCH Below is a detailed description of the roles available to volunteers, and what each role entails. Please have a few choices ready of which roles you’d like to try out and indicate these choices on your application form. All positions require dependability, a positive attitude, and the ability to work independently or with a team.

FILL OUT AN AWESOME, TOTALLY NOT TEDIOUS APPLICATION Please fill out the form to the best of your ability, as this information is used to train, schedule, and organize our volunteer workforce.

THE WAITING GAME Once your application form is filled out, you will receive an automated message that it has been received. The Volunteer Coordinator will read through your application before any further steps are taken. Once the Volunteer Coordinator has evaluated your application, they may phone you or email you to clarify details or ask further questions. Please expect that you may not hear for a few days to a week after your application has been submitted.

TIME TO TRAIN Once your application has been approved by the Volunteer Coordinator, if you are volunteering for the 10 day Festival, you will be invited to attend a New Volunteer Orientation followed by team-specific training sessions. These dates are typically scheduled for early-mid December and early January.

If volunteering for special events or the Vic theatre training often happens at the beginning of your first volunteer shift unless otherwise indicated.

YOU’RE SCHEDULED IN VFF uses the website Shiftboard to schedule our volunteer force, which is an awesome tool designed for volunteers! You can sign in at any time and check out your shifts, pick up or trade shifts, and see upcoming news and events. If you fill in the application form it will automatically create a Shiftboard account for you.

*PLEASE NOTE FOR THE FESTIVAL: Volunteer shifts for the 10 Day Victoria Film Festival begin the first week of January and end the last day of the Festival.Volunteers are required to commit to a minimum of 15 hours of volunteer work during the lead up to and/or during the Festival.

THE VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE When you’re on your shifts, it’s important to maintain good customer service skills, be enthusiastic and positive, but most of all to have fun! The VFF brings people from around the world to Victoria for the 10 day Festival  as well as unites the community in a love of film and media arts. We want you to enjoy your experience so that you come back year after year (we have some volunteers who have been with us for almost 20 years)!

REAP THE REWARDS We think you should get to enjoy the Festival too! Committing to 15 hours of volunteering at the 10 Day Festival earns you 5 free films at the Festival and gives you the opportunity to interact with filmmakers and patrons throughout the Festival. These hours can be completed in January with office and box office work, or during the Festival. the opportunity to interact with filmmakers and patrons throughout the Festival. If your shifts are during the Festival, you may be eligible to receive your vouchers after completing one full shift as long as you are scheduled for 15 hours. Completing your hours also earns you an invite to our fabulous EndFest party, where volunteers and staff can eat, drink and celebrate all of our hard work and end-of-Festival exhaustion. It’s always a great party!

Volunteers at the Vic Theatre receive volunteer vouchers that can be used for movies throughout the year at The Vic Theatre.

Job Descriptions


Assisting the Manager and Assistant Manager at the Vic Theatre located in downtown Victoria. The Vic operates year round and has volunteer shifts available every day of the week. Volunteer opportunities include concession (The Vic is licensed so having SIR is an asset) and Box Office (ticket taking, selling tickets).

Perfect for people who enjoy interacting with the public and can do so in a professional manner; are comfortable handling cash, and are an intuitive “people-person”.


Lend a hand at our awesome events throughout the year. Help out at our Pop up Events, Movies Under the Maltworks, FreeB Festival and Art of the Cocktail. Volunteer shifts vary for each event but usually include set up/teardown, beverage/food service and Front of House duties.

Perfect for the party person within. Must be friendly, polite and able to interact with patrons. Some of the volunteer positions require Serving It Right .


Lend a hand at the VFF Office. Office volunteers assist with administrative duties prior to and during the Festival. Duties include reception, answering phones, promoting and providing information to the public about the Festival, data entry, photocopying, production, filing, errands and cleaning and other general office duties as required. General office skills, knowledge of Excel, Word, Filemaker Pro and familiarity with Mac computers are an asset but are not required.

Perfect for people with a positive attitude who are friendly and enthusiastic about the Festival. Good work habits such as punctuality, dependability and the ability to work independently is required, particularly when Festival staff are busy.


Our biggest volunteer team! You’re on the front line of the Festival. You’ll be helping out with all duties related to our audience at festival screenings including ushering, surveys, line-up, door traffic control, greeting & ticket exchange, information desk and other venue duties as required.

Perfect for people who can approach people in a friendly and professional manner; work independently and as a team member, have great attention to detail, and are an intuitive “people-person”.


Sell Festival tickets, passes and memberships at our Festival box office and at our venues. This includes shifts in January for pre-Festival ticket sales. Box office volunteers must be able to provide public with Festival information and answer questions that arise. Information will be provided.

Perfect for people interested in providing service to the public in a professional and friendly manner. Knowledge of customer service and sales is an asset.


Previous film experience required. Help us behind the scenes: operate film, video projectors, and/or video cameras during festival screenings and events. Looking for experienced projectionists, those with experience in setting up video projection, PA systems, video production, and technical repair. Must be reliable and flexible and have the ability to take direction, work independently and as team member.


Drive our Festival guests to and from venues and events, hotels and airports. Assist passengers with luggage and in boarding vehicle. Involves running errands, courier services, and assisting with distribution.

Perfect for people who can interact with VIP guests in a professional manner, work independently and as a team member, who is punctual and dependable, and who has a clean driving and criminal record.


Lend a hand at our fabulous events at the 10 Day Festival’s  Opening Gala, in our Donor and Guest lounge, and at all our exclusive VFF guest receptions. Assist with set up, clean up, beverage/food service, hosting duties, and anything else required.

Perfect for the party person within. Must be friendly, polite and able to interact with VIP guests. Serving It Right is an asset and is required for any serving position.


Get our message out on the town! Distribute promotional materials (volunteer posters, Festival posters, program guides) in assigned areas. Volunteers must be able to relate to people in a friendly and professional manner and access to vehicle an asset.

Perfect for those who want to get out and see the town.


We need volunteers to work on special projects including the design and decoration for our Opening Gala. If you have experience in set/stage design and would love an opportunity to work on a creative project and showcase your work, we want to hear from you!


Document and photograph Festival events. Experience in photography an asset. Having your own camera is a requirement. Must be able to work independently and as a team member.
