Carmen Maura, Spanish cinema icon and frequent collaborator with Pedro Almodóvar, stars in Calle Málaga, the latest film from acclaimed Moroccan filmmaker Maryam Touzani (The Blue Caftan, Adam).
María Ángeles (Maura) is a passionate senior who enjoys her days in the Spanish quarter of Tangier. When her daughter arrives for an unexpected visit, she confronts María about selling her house to cover the financial burdens that have been put on their family. However, María is comfortable with the life she has where she is cherished by her community and quietly refuses to leave. As tension with her daughter rises, romance unexpectedly blossoms between María and an old rival. In this sensual, heartwarming film about aging gracefully, Calle Málaga offers a lesson for all to firmly hold onto what you cherish and make the most of life, no matter how many years you’ve lived.
Winner of the 2025 Venice Spotlight Audience Award and Morocco’s submission for Best International Feature Film at the Oscars, Calle Málaga is a crowd-pleasing testament to a life lived fully, with all its joys and hardships. – JC
