Surreal + Horror + Cult
“A lonely woman spends her nights gravedigging, unable to rid herself of the stench of death and longing for the day she finds true love. Of course, the day she finally meets the man of her dreams, he drowns at sea. So, what else can you do besides resurrect him from the dead?
The result is the wild ride that is Grace Glowicki’s Dead Lover, a delightfully bizarre and funny take on gothic horror. Lovingly crafted with handmade sets and shot on 16mm film, it is a strangely beautiful film that only the director/co-writer could have envisioned. The story is also brought to life by the four-person cast (including Glowicki’s real-life partner Ben Petrie), whose members play off each other perfectly. With the added experience of Smell-O-Vision, the film has an infectious energy that has to be sniffed to be believed.
Mixing the surrealism of Guy Maddin with the campiness of John Waters, Dead Lover is a future midnight classic that will disturb, entertain and maybe even make you believe in love in equal measures. – JD “
